Unlocking AI Potential in CARICOM Secretariat

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to significantly enhance public sector efficiency, service delivery, and decision‑making across the Caribbean. Recognising this opportunity, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat partnered with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to strengthen internal AI awareness, skills, and readiness, while also identifying practical AI applications that could improve Secretariat operations. See article here.

This initiative builds on the regional momentum generated under the AI for SIDS 2.0 programme, and is consistent with the capacity building agenda endorsed by CARICOM Heads of Government in July 2024.

The project applied a customised version of UNDP’s AI Sprint methodology, focusing on two core components:

AI Fundamentals
A tailored executive‑level AI workshop was delivered for CARICOM leadership, complemented by a customised, self‑paced online AI course deployed to all Secretariat staff.

The in-person training in November 2025 was well attended and received by the Secretariat’s Executive team. The all-staff online course achieved strong uptake and engagement, with an 88% completion rate among 252 Secretariat staff, and an average satisfaction score of 8.3 out of 10. This component significantly strengthened baseline AI literacy and institutional readiness within the Secretariat.

AI Flagships
In parallel, UNDP supported the development of three AI project concepts aligned with CARICOM operational priorities. These concepts have been shared with the Secretariat and will inform a Phase II of the Initiative in due course, supporting the Secretariat’s longer‑term digital transformation objectives.
